Books
I was on a quest to make a couple of books for two of my granddaughters for our vacation this summer. We are taking the girls to the Oregon Coast for their first glimpses of the ocean. I want them to have something special to record their thoughts in as we travel the coast. It will be something they can look at years from now to remind them of our trip. I, also, wanted them to have a place to tuck away a few pictures and things they may collect along the way. Get your Bind-It-All out and join me in a fun little project that can be designed for any type of occasion. Supplies: Instructions: 1. Cut 2 pieces of chipboard to 7¼” x 5¼”. 2. Cut 2 pieces of North Sea cardstock to 9¼” x 7¼”. 3. Lay the blue cardstock piece face down. Run tape across one side of chipboard. Center the chipboard on top of the blue piece of cardstock having a 1” border on each side. Cut each corner diagonally leaving about 1/16” from the corner of the chipboard. Run tape across a side edge and bring up around the chipboard. Repeat for the remaining 3 sides. Repeat for the second piece of chipboard. 4. Cut two 5” x 7” pieces of white cardstock. Run tape around the outer edges and center to the back of the covers covering up the chipboard left exposed. Do both the front and back covers. 5. On the back of the front cover, tear out a quote from the vellum. Rub on the shell in the upper left corner. Adhere vellum tape to the back of the quote and place over the shell leaving part of the shell exposed. 6. Stamp the dolphin so it will be approximately in the middle of the clear pocket. Color the dolphin with the dark gray and light gray markers. Stamp the top part of the light house in the lower right corner, making sure you place it far enough to the left to miss the holes that will be punched later for the binding.
7. Turn cover over to the front side. Stamp lighthouse with Noir ink on a piece of paper from the sticky-note pad and cut out. (Try to stamp so part of the image will be over the sticky portion of the paper). Re-ink the lighthouse stamp and stamp on the cover (see photo for placement). Cover the lighthouse with the mask (stamped image on the sticky note paper). Ink dolphin image and stamp over the lighthouse 3 times re-inking the image each time. Remove mask from the lighthouse. See how the lighthouse appears to be in front of the dolphins? Stamp the birds randomly around the lighthouse with the noir ink. 8. Spell out the letters ‘T-H-E’ with the alpha stamps, ink with Noir Black and stamp on the cover. Repeat spelling out the words “SEA,” “AND,” “ME” (See photo for placement). 9. Use the colored pencils and color in the light house. 10. Use the chalk pencils and color in the dolphins. 11. Ink flourishes stamp with the chalk ink and lightly stamp randomly on the cover to give the appearance of a swirling sea. 12. Take grungeboard numbers and place face down on the watermark ink pad. Press the number into the ink. Sprinkle gold embossing powder (EP) over the number. Lift carefully and shake off (try using a pair of tweezers so your fingers don’t rub off the EP). Hold down with the tweezers and heat with embossing gun until the EP melts. The glitter in the embossing power will give the texture appearance of sand. What little girl doesn’t like a little bling here and there? Adhere the numbers to the cover with Crystal Lacquer. 13. Carefully apply some Crystal Lacquer to the windows on the top of the lighthouse. Set aside to dry. 14. On the inside of the back cover apply some stickers. Set aside.
For the Pages: 1. Cut 10 sheets of text weight paper to 7⅛” x 5⅛”. You should be able to get 2 pages out of each sheet. On the front page, stamp the lighthouse with charcoal ink. Stamp ‘Oregon Coast 2008’ below the lighthouse. Tear out a vellum quote, apply vellum adhesive to the back, and attach to the top of the page. 2. Cut 2 pieces of white card stock to 7⅛” x 10¼”. Fold in half to measure 7⅛” x 5 ⅛”. Place the folds to the outside for each page (they will open from the inside to the outside). See photo. Cut ½” off of the side of the top page of each folded piece.
3. Cut 2 pieces of blue cardstock to 4” x 4½” and adhere to the top of each page. Attach stickers. 4. Open out the left page. Cut vellum quote and attach to the right side of the opened page. Tear a piece of blue cardstock. Cut to 5⅛” and attach to the left side of the fold. Attach rub-on shells. 5. Open out the right page. Tear a piece of blue cardstock. Cut to 5⅛” and attach to the right side of the fold. Tear around the vellum quote and attach in the center of the page. Apply rub-on starfish. 6. Attach a piece of text-weight paper to the back side of each folded page. 7. Randomly choose some pages and attach the self-stick clear pockets. On a couple of the pages, attach sticker tag and ocean-theme tag.
Finishing the Book: 1. Punch holes and attach the O-wire with the Bind-it-All per manufacturer’s directions. 2. Attach ribbons/fibers to the wire.
Summer Vacation Journal 2 Supplies: Directions: 1. Prepare covers and pages following the directions in the above journal using the same measurements. Cover the front side of the journal with the orange side of the cardstock. Cover the back cover with the green side. Use North Seas to cover the inside of both covers. Note: At this point, you may want to punch your binding holes on the front and back covers and pages for ease of placement for the embellishments. 2. Manipulate clay in hands until warmed and conditioned. Work a small amount of the iridescent flakes into the clay. Press the clay into the sun mold. Trim excess clay from around the mold, try to make the back of the sun as flat as you can with your fingers. Carefully remove the clay from the mold. Place the sun on the ceramic tile and cut away the clay between the rays of the sun. Carefully press a few iridescent flakes into the surface of the sun. Bake the sun according to the manufacturer’s directions. Set aside and allow to cool. 3. Place the foot prints sticker on the front cover. Layer this with a piece of punchinella. (Use the paper layers in the next step to adhere the punchinella to the cover.) 4. Using left over scraps, tear a piece of the green/orange cardstock to fit the top of the cover, placing the piece green side up. Repeat with a piece of the blue cardstock, placing it at the bottom of the cover. Attach these torn pieces over the punchinella, anchoring it to the cover. 5. With the alphabet stamps, stamp ‘Summer Vacation’ with Noir ink. (See photo for placement) 6. Adhere an F, U, and N round alpha sticker to each of the bottle caps and attach to the cover with Crystal Lacquer. 7. Attach the sun to the cover with Crystal Lacquer. 8. Attach sticker border to the right side of the cover. Set aside to let the crystal lacquer dry. 9. On the first page of the journal, stamp the lighthouse, seagulls and wording with Noir ink. Color the lighthouse, greenery and clouds with markers. Color the seagulls and create highlights on the lighthouse with the white gelly roll pen.
10. Randomly pick some pages to place the clear pockets on. Stamp the fun-n-sun and sunglasses stamps at the top and bottom of the pages (see photo). Color the images in with the markers.
11. Create the fold-outs as shown in the previous journal project. Tear some orange cardstock and blue cardstock and attach to the inside of the fold-outs. Attach computer generated quote. On the outside of the fold-out pages, place a 4”x4” piece of orange cardstock at the top of each page. Attach stickers at the bottom and spell out the words “Live” and “Dream” with the green alphabet stickers. Attach a piece of the text-weight paper to the back of each fold-out page.
12. Using the Cricut machine, set the cut for 11¼”. Cut out a library pocket. Glue the pocket together using the ATG tape gun. Cut a piece of ribbon and place in the holes and knot. Trim. Write “She sells seashells down by the seashore.” with the white gelly roll pen. Attach stickers to the front of the pocket. Attach pocket to the middle of the back page of the book. 13. Attach stickers to the inside of the back cover. Stamp the flip flops and color in with Gelly Roll Glaze pens.
14. Attach ephemera, if desired, to the front inside cover and place a clear pocket over it. 15. Attach vellum computer generated quote. Attach a shell sticker on top of the quote. 16. Attach ribbon to the bull nose clip. This will act as a bookmark. 17. Bind the book together according to manufacturer’s directions with the Bind-it-All. 18. Attach ribbons to the Binding. 19. Sign your work!
