Winter Friends Serving Tray

By Nancy Leimer
Rubber Roadsters
Advanced Stamping Team Designer

Using Acrylic Paint and Instant Decoupage is a great way to expand your horizons. Painting on your projects and then adding decoupage sealer can add depth as well as texture. Once all has dried, add stamped images and seal again with the decoupage medium.  Continue to build your creation layers until you have created something special and unique. Think outside the box using this technique!

Supplies:
Chipboard Serving Tray (Becky Chabot)
Acrylic Stamps (Inkadinkado)
Azure Stamp Pad (StazOn)
Frost White Pigment Stamp Pad (Color Box)
Galaxy Gold Stamp Pad (Tsukineko, Inc)
Misc. Acrylic Blocks (CTMH)
Acrylic Gesso (Daler Rowney)
White Acrylic Paint (Delta Ceramcoat)
Baby Blue Acrylic Paint (Americana)
Slick White Dimensional Fabric Paint (Tulip)
Orange Cardstock (CTMH)
White Cardstock (CTMH)
Instant Decoupage-Gloss (Aleene’s)
Scissors (Fiskars)
Deckle Scissors (Stampin’ Up)
Misc. Paint Brushes
Foam Paint Brush
Paper Plates
Zig Glue
Gold Gelly Roll Gel Pen (Sakura)
Paint Tray (Donna Dewberry)
Assorted Magazines to cut out Birds for theme of Winter Friends

Instructions:

1.   Begin by coating serving tray with the Gesso using foam brush. Allow to dry completely.

2.   Insert a paper plate into the paint tray. Add a puddle of white and blue paint to paper plate. Using a stiff paint brush drag some of the white paint and some of the blue paint together to mix different shades of white and blue. With these three colors cover the serving tray and allow to dry.

3.   Scavenge various magazines to find pictures and cut outs for your theme. The birds were cut out using trimming scissors, but use the deckle scissors for any background or pictures. The deckle leaves sharp and jagged edges indicating the sharp winds of winter.

4.   Ink up the acrylic stamps with the Azure StazOn stamp pad and randomly stamp the dried serving tray.

5.   Use the white stamp pad to distress all the magazine cut outs along the edges including the birds.

6.   Cut out an oval frame from the orange cardstock. Write or print out the name of the project and glue to inside of orange oval. Highlight the inside and outside edges of the orange oval with the gold gel pen.

7.   Lay out all the cut outs and begin to decide where you will want to add them to the tray. Add the Zig glue to the back of the cut outs and put into position.  Make sure that, as they are added to the tray, there are not any air bubbles underneath them. Air bubbles create somewhat of an old fashioned look to your work, which I have done.  Allow to dry completely.

8.   Swipe the gold stamp pad in different places directly on the tray for accents.

9.   Coat the inside bottom and the inside edges of the tray with the instant decoupage. Once this has dried, add another coat of the decoupage.

10. With the white slick fabric paint, add snowdrops to the outside edges of the tray. This, also, must be allowed to dry.

DESIGNER’S NOTE: Do not add the snow drops to the inside of the tray because this creates dimensional bumps that won’t allow cups to set level.

11. Coat the edges and the bottom of the tray with at least two coats of the instant decoupage.

12.  Your work can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Never immerse this project in water.
