Velvet Ribbon Stamping

Mary Shoebridge
Crafty Cruisers
Intermediate Stamping Team Designer

This Holiday Season project includes several unique stamping techniques.  Stamping on velvet ribbon yields such amazing and stunning results.  The inclusion of the holiday confetti is a way to embellish stamped art.  The use of the acrylic paints and the large foam stamp make it easy and enjoyable to complete.  The making of the red background paper adds interest and dimension to the stamped and decorated tree.  When you have completed the tree, you will be all set with a holiday card to send to someone special.  After you have tried this technique, you will want to try other colors of ribbon and different stamping themes.  You can also use velvet paper which is different from the ribbon and is found in scrap booking shops.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.  Start the Christmas Tree Card by stamping on the Forest green Velvet Ribbon.  Have the stamps and palette next to you and the paints squeezed out on the palette.  Place the velvet on your work surface.  Mix a small amount of the three green paints together.  This makes a nice paint that has a lot of glitter in it.  Take a piece of sponge and cover the large tree.  Mix some of the nutmeg brown and Inca gold together and apply to the tree trunk.  Stamp the tree on the center of the velvet ribbon and set aside to dry.

2.  When the tree is dry about 30 minutes, use the oval template to trace a large oval around the tree and cut the tree out with the decorative scissors.  Apply some gold paint to the edge of the green velvet oval.

3.  The next step is to create the red background paper.  Take the red linen paper and stamp the pine bough images around the edge of the paper.  Use the same mixture of green paint and apply it to the stamp image and then proceed to stamp.  With a make-up applicator or fine tip brush, apply a little gold paint to the edge of the red paper.  Set aside to dry.

(Note:  The image was removed from the cube and adhered to E-Z mount foam cling and then used on an acrylic mount)

4.  Stamp the saying “Merry Christmas” with the Rocket Red Brilliance Pigment Ink on the gold paper and emboss with the Red Powder.  Trim around the saying closely with the fine tipped scissors.

5.  Decorate the stamped tree with the holiday confetti and glue the red beading close to the edge of the oval.

6.  Assemble the velvet holiday card.  First, glue the red background paper to the forest green card with the glue stick.  Add the velvet oval on top of the red background paper. Add foam mounting tape to the back of the saying and position it on the card front.   It is possible to decorate the tree after you glue it to the background.  Do the decorating the way you choose.  Be careful that the confetti is glued down well with the Tacky Glue.

Your special Holiday Velvet card is completed.  Try some other foam stamps and acrylic paints on the different colors of velvet.  I really like working with stamping and the velvet.  The Holiday Tree can be framed in a 5” by 7” frame and it makes a lovely gift.
