Stamped Wood Ornament

By M. Elizabeth Lee
Rubber Roadsters
Publisher/Editor/Designer/Writer

Designing ornaments has been a tradition for me since my childhood.  They are small, manageable, and capable of being completed in a relatively quick amount of time compared to some other crafts.  There is no boundary on the styles or themes that ornaments can express.  There is always a distinctive ornament waiting for you to craft and please that someone special on your holiday gift list.

Supplies:

•  Mona Lisa Madonna Stamp (Ma Vinci)
•  Blue VersaFine Ink Pad (Tsukineko)
•  6” Oval Wood Basket Base with pre~drilled holes (S&S Worldwide)
•  Sanding Sponge (3M)
•  Tack Rag
•  Winter Blue Acrylic Paint (DecoArt Americana)
•  ¾” Wash Taklon Paint Brush (American Painter)
•  Water Receptacle
•  Heat Tool (Milwaukee)
•  Fall Garden Stickers (Miss Elizabeth)
•  Star Flower Beads with center rhinestones (Wal~Mart)
•  Spray Sealer (Krylon)
•  Polyurethane Satin Finish (Krylon)
•  Paper Towel (Viva)
•  Silk~Ease Royal Blue Silk Ribbon (Offray)
•  Tapestry Needle
•  ProCraft Craft Gloves (Wilshire Technologies)

 Instructions:

  1. Sand the wood base with a sanding sponge and lightly wipe down with a tack rag.

  1. Wet brush in water and blot off excess on paper towel.  Apply two coats of Winter Blue paint to the front, back, and sides of wood.  Allow the paint to dry in~between coats.

  1. Spray several light coats of Krylon sealer to the surface of the painted wood.

  1. Ink up image with the Blue Versafine ink pad and stamp the painted wood surface.  Speed dry with a heat tool.

  1. Apply the floral stickers to the top and bottom of the Mona Lisa image.   Spray seal with several light coats of Krylon Polyurethane Finish.  Allow to dry thoroughly.

  1. Cut a 2~yard length of ribbon and thread a tapestry needle.  Run the threaded needle through the hole at the bottom adding a bead to the ribbon before proceeding to the next hole.  Refer to photo as a placement guide.  Continue sewing around the wood in this process.  Tie off ribbon at the bottom of the oval wooden base.

  1. Cut 8 lengths of ribbon 6” long and larkshead knot all at once to the bottom hole.  Trim ends as desired.

  1. Cut a 4” length of ribbon, fold in half, and knot the ends for a hanging cord.  Attach this to the top hole of the oval wooden base with a larkshead knot.  Utilize this art piece as an ornament or a mini decorative wall hanging.
