Paper Tole Simplicity

By Wanda Troupe
Hot Rod Scrampers
Advanced Scramping Team Designer

I love the results of these paper tole roses on this layout. This background was stamped with bleach, and then over stamped with ink.  I recently re-discovered my love for crocheting and when I saw this picture of my niece, I knew I had to somehow include it on this layout. I crocheted a border with white yarn and ran pink ribbon through it to match her hat.

You may see more detailed instructions on this technique in my April article. The combination of bleach, inks and acrylic paints provide complete eye candy on this page!

For more examples of paper tole tutorial, see Mary Shoebridge’s Beginner Paper Tole project and Becky Lemire’s Advanced Paper Tole project.

Paper Tole Flower Instructions:

1.                Using Versamark, stamp rose image three times on light pink cardstock. Heat emboss each image with clear detail embossing powder. Cut out the rose around the outside edge of the image, minus the leaves. Cut the second rose out around the inside layer. Cut out the center of the third image.

(***Note: Repeat this step two more times. I used a different color ink for each flower for variation).

2.                Using Versamark, stamp rose image three times on green cardstock. Heat emboss with clear detail embossing powder. Cut out complete images.

3.                Glue largest cut out rose to cut out leaves image. Adhere the next layer on top with pop dots being careful to line image up correctly. Adhere center cut out image on top of the second layer using pop dots. That’s it! Your paper tole embellishment is complete!

(***Note: Repeat this process for the other two roses.)

Layout Instructions:

1.                Stamp background with rose and word stamps using bleach. When dry, stamp over the stamp spots using pink dye ink.*

2.                Dry brush entire background with a 2” paintbrush using white acrylic paint. This gives the background a sanded look, but is much easier to do than sanding.  Tear a small corner of dark pink cardstock and dry brush this also with white paint

3.                Ink decorative corner stamps with white paint and stamp in three corners. When the white paint is dry, stamp over the image using hot pink paint.

4.                Using hot pink paint and foam alphas, stamp the word “ROSE” on the left side of the page. When the pink paint is dry, stamp over same letters with black paint.

5.                Stamp the rest of the words using various alphabet sets using black dye ink.

6.                Mat 5”x7” picture with white cardstock leaving about a ¼” border. Mat again with light pink cardstock leaving another ¼” border.

7.                Cut dark pink cardstock about 8-1/2” square. Dry brush white paint. Attach matted picture, centering to the right, leaving room for the crocheted border. Glue crocheted border to the left of picture using Scrappy Glue.

8.                Attach torn dark pink corner to bottom right hand corner. Glue paper tole flowers as desired.

*Don’t worry if you don’t get it exactly. Don’t even try because it looks shadowy when the ink image is shifted a little.

**You may emboss with dye inks by first inking your stamp with Versamark, then ink with the colored dye ink. Heat emboss with clear embossing powder. Just remember to clean your stamp between inking each image to avoid accidentally placing a dye inked stamp on your Versamark pad.
