•  Rust Colored Velvet Paper Cut into 4 -  2” x 8.5” strips (unknown)
•  Bone Folder
•  Hole punch

Instructions:

  1. Stamp with distressing ink colors and Crackle background stamp on the 12”x12” rust, and 2 – 8½” x 11” cream cardstocks, Put aside.

  1. Make the accordion fold for the flags.  Fold 2 of the non stamped pieces of 8½” x 11” cardstock in half and then fold each half in half, continue until it is completely folded into an accordion.  You will have 7 folds on one side and 8 folds on the other side for each cardstock.  Once the cardstocks have been folded, unfold them and stamp with the distressing inks and brush distressing inks over the folds.  When dry, refold the accordion folds and put aside.

  1. Stamp with the distressing inks and crackle stamp on each of the 28 flags on both sides.  Put aside to dry.

  1. Using the 12”x12 “cardstock, the PVA glue and the 8½” x 11” Chip Board. Cover the chipboard with the 12” x12” stamped cardstock.  To do this, apply glue to the chipboard evenly on one side only and then center the 11” side of the chipboard (glue side down) on the 12”x12” cardstock.  This will leave quite a bit of extra cardstock on the edges of the 8½” side.  Cut off extra leaving cardstock about 1” from the chip board.  Using your bone folder, trace along the edges of the chipboard to help you with folding.  Cut a diagonal cut across each of the corners near the corners of the chipboard.  Apply glue to each edge and fold.  Once the glue is dry, you are going to take your accordion folded cardstock and velvet paper strip and glue to the back.  This is tricky so pay close attention to how you are applying the folder paper.  First work with the velvet strip, glue the wrong side of the velvet strip to one 8½” side of the back cover by gluing ½ of the strip to the covered side (right side) of the cover and bringing the other side of the strip around to the wrong side of the cover.  Do this to each 8½” edge of the back cover.  When these strips are dry, apply a strip of glue from 8½” edge to 8½” edge at the center of the wrong side of the cover. Attach the ribbon making sure that there is an even amount on each side of the cover.  This ribbon will be under the accordion fold and will come out and around the fold and back through the front.  Refer to Photo.

  1. Make sure your album back cover is lying on your table with the uncovered side (wrong side) facing up and the 8½” sides to the right and left and the ribbon out of the way (place it underneath the cover if you want).  Remember this is a landscape layout album style meaning it’s wider than it is tall.

  1.  Now your accordion folded paper will have the 7 “mountains” facing up, which will give you a flat edge that will be glued to the 8” side of the back cover.  Using the glue, carefully glue down the flat side to your back making sure the first folded edge lines up with the edge of the cover.  Once dry, do the same thing with the other folded cardstock and other side of the back cover.

  1. Now that your accordion folds have been added, stamp the last piece of 8½” x 11” cardstock with the distressing ink and icicle stamp from the Penguins set.   Cut it down so that it fits on the inside of the back cover and glue down.  This will give you a finished look.  I, also, added an 8” x 10” photo here.  Put this aside. Note here that the velvet paper is going to be on the same edge as the accordion fold cardstock, you will not see the velvet paper from the wrong side of this back cover.

  1. Now work with the front sides of your book.  You will cover each of the fronts the same way you covered the back using the already stamped cardstocks you have left over.  Once these 2 covers are covered, you will take a strip of the rust velvet paper and wrap glue it to one 8½”side of each cover.  Wrap it around just as you did the sides of the back cover.  Once it is dry, punch a 3/16” hole through all the layers of the velvet strip in the center of the album cover.  Your ribbon will come through this hole to tie.  Do the same to each side of the cover.

  1. Again, here is a tricky part, but the look is so much nicer than having the ribbon come all the way around the accordion fold and be seen from the front.  With the wrong side of one front cover, make sure that the velvet is not the side you are using, this should be the center of your front.  Place some glue on the wrong side of the left front cover leaving a spot in the center of the wrong side without glue.  You will glue from top edge (non velvet side) to Ό” from center and then ½” from center start applying glue again until you get to the bottom.  Once you have glued this, match up the side with the accordion fold cardstock and glue them together.  This will give you one side of your book.  Allow to dry.

  1. There should be two 8½” x 11” cream cardstocks which are not stamped on left. Cut a piece of cream cardstock in half and trim so that this piece of cream cardstock goes from the accordion fold edge until it just meets the velvet.  I matched up one edge of the cardstock to the accordion fold edge and then cut a small slit where the other side meets the velvet and used a paper trimmer to cut it properly.  Glue this paper down completing the finished side of your front cover and then pull the ribbon around the accordion fold and thread through the spot you left in the side of the book.  Pull through and then up through the hole you have punched in the velvet.  This will thread the ribbon through the back side of front cover and then the ribbon is only seen again where it comes through the hole to tie.  Do the same with the other side of the front cover.

  1. Now you should have your book completely done except for the flags.  Open the left side of your book and work from that side first.  Take 1 flag and glue it at the bottom to the outside of the first accordion fold.  Now take 1 flag and glue it to the inside of the first accordion fold.  Leave room at both edges and in the middle.  You do not want these flags right next to each other nor do you want them at the edge.  Play with them a bit before gluing them down.  If you are unfamiliar with flag books, you can line up all of your flags before gluing to see how they will look.  Now once you have the first fold with 2 flags, do all the rest in the same pattern.  Remember all of the flags have to be attached the same way.  The top flags will be attached to the front of the fold and the bottom flags will be attached at the back of the fold.  To complete your book, do the same thing to the other side of your book.

  2. Attach photos and enjoy.
