Victorian Wedding Box

By Cindy Seabright
Trailblazers
Paper Arts & Multi Media Team Designer

Brides are popping up all over since Summer is the time when most couples plan weddings. Being a June Bride myself, I always think of my own Wedding Day!  I love to save things such as ticket stubs, a lock of hair, and that ‘piece of veil’ that I stepped on.  I guess everyone has a little romance lingering inside.  I thought that this would be a perfect time to make something a little sentimental to put all those little, meaningful mementos in.  I hope that you will catch a glimpse of a bygone era when you make this hat box.

Although it looks elegant and expensive, the cost to make this project is minimal.

Supplies:

  Booking Set (CTMH)
  Soft Rose Ink Pad (Memories)
  I Sheet Heavy Pink Cardstock
Paper Mache Oval or Round Box (Walmart or any Variety Sore)
  Gesso (Delta)
  Rose Cloud (Delta Ceramcoat)
  Village Green (Delta Ceramcoat)
  #10 Flat Brush (unknown)
  Polybrush
Sewing Machine (or used pre-stitched cardstock)
Pink Silk Thread (Jo Anns Fabrics)
Crocheted Lace (Jo Anns Fabrics or any Craft Store)
Gold Metallic Paper (Leaving Prints or Provo)
  Roses (Hobby Lobby)
  Tassels (Wrights-Fabric Store)
  YES Paste (TAC)
  Gold Leafing Pen (Krylon)
  Victorian Wedding Certificate
Ultra Fine Glitter Pee Wee Set (Barbara Tromley)
  Orbis Circle Cutter
  Pale Pink Pearls (Hobby Lobby)
Light Pink Eyelash Fibers (Fibers by the Yard)
  Paper Cutter (Fiskars 12”)
Grid Cutting Mat for Work Surface (Creative Memories)
  HP Scanjet 3970
  Photo Software
  Xyron Adhesive

Instructions:

    1. The bottom and top of the box must be gessoed.  Using your brush, apply the gesso in one direction when you prepare the piece.  When applying the Acrylics, you are going to leave an appearance of antiquing. It does not have to be a solid coat. The more white spaces that are left, the more aged it will look.

    1. Once the Gesso is dry, apply Village Green with the Polybrush.  This will be a dry brushed effect.  Prep your brush with paint and brush most of the paint out on a palette or Viva paper towel. With this dry brush, scrub the paint on.  Repeat this process until all areas have color.  Refer to photo for color placement.  Using the Rose Cloud paint, apply the same technique on the inside of the box and around the edge of the top.

    1. After both pieces are completely dry, use your Orbis circle cutting tool to center the top where you will use the Gold Leafing Pen.  If you do not have this tool, use any item that is a circle such as a plate, etc.  Using the leafing pen, make a circle smaller then the top of the box.

    1. At this time, cut the pink cardstock 2” wide. Make sure you have a big enough piece to go around the box.  Using your sewing machine and silk thread, sew any attractive pattern of your choice onto the cardstock (or use pre-sewn cardstock). Run this cardstock through the Xyron machine and apply the cardstock around the bottom of the box.  Place the lid back onto the box and put the pink cardstock where no green will show after it is placed on the bottom.

    1. Take your Gold Leafing Pen and very carefully go around the edge of the pink paper at the bottom and top.  Refer to photo. This will complete the bottom of the box!

    1. With the Yes paste, put the lace around the edge of the box top.  When the lace is dry, glue the pearls around the box on top of the lace. Set aside to air dry.

    1. Use your Xyron or other adhesive to attach the rectangle piece of gold metallic paper to the box lid.

    1. Adhere the Wedding Certificate in an attractive angle over the metallic gold paper.  I carefully filled in the information about my Wedding on the certificate beforehand.  It is quite small so if you feel you can not write that small it can have just lines giving the effect of writing.

    1. Apply very small squiggles of glue randomly to the box lid and sprinkle on the ultra fine glitter.

    1. Arrange roses to your liking.  I added some glitter to the petals of those, also.  Twist the stems, trim, and tie a pretty ribbon in a bow.  Wrap the tassel around the stem and paste a little glue behind the roses using Yes paste.  Refer to photo for placement.

    1. Glue down the eyelash fibers around the Gold Metallic Paper. Paste the Roses to the corner of the certificate.

I hope you put lots of goodies inside your Wedding Box and add this to your list of favorite projects.  They make great Wedding and Shower Gifts!
