Paper Doll Technique - “Dressing Up” your Images

Cheryl Hurttgam, #273
Rubber Roadsters
Advanced
Stamping Team Designer

This technique can be very time consuming if you choose highly detailed stamps. However, it’s especially fun to “dress” your images.  You can use ANY type of stamp and background paper.  You’ll have fun choosing just what colors and patterns to use to make your creations a hit at the next stamp club meeting!

Supplies

•  Live, Love, Laugh stamp set (TAC)
•  Dance Yourself Silly stamp set (TAC)
•  Noir Black Hybrid Ink Pad (TAC)
•  Claret Red Hybrid Ink Pad (TAC)
•  Tombow Markers
   - Flesh
   - Beige
   - Red
   - Gray
•  Scrap white card stock at least 1” x 3”s
•  Scrap red card stock at least 2” x 3 ½”s
•  Scrap white or light colored card stock at least 3” x 5”s
•  10” x 7” red card stock
•  3” x 3” white card stock
•  3 ½” x 3 ½”  & 3” x 3” background paper
•  4 ½” x 6 ½” background paper or card stock
•  Xyron 150 Create a Sticker
•  Mono Adhesive (Tombow)
•  Sponge Wedge
•  Detail Scissors

Instructions

1.    Stamp the lady image onto your 3” x3” white card stock and onto your 3” x 3” background paper.

2.    Using detail scissors, cut out the dress of the image stamped on the background paper.

3.    Color the image stamped on the white card stock with the marker colors you have selected.  You only need to color the sections that will not be covered by the background paper cut out.  Create a mask using a post-it note* and cover the colored image.

4.    Tear the largest piece of scrap card stock so that you have a jagged edge.  Place over your masked image.

5.    Using a sponge wedge, pounce it onto the Claret ink pad and drag across the jagged edge over the masked image and around the entire background of the 3”x3” piece.  Move the scrap around and continue sponging until you have a desired background.  Sponge edge all the way around the square of card stock.

6.    Using the gray marker, go around the entire stamped image.   Don’t forget to give a shadow around her feet.

7.    Run the cut out dress through a Xyron Sticker Maker.  Before removing the cellophane covering, be sure to rub around the cut out to remove the excess adhesive.

8.    Remove the cellophane to expose your sticker.   Remove sticker from wax paper.  With a steady hand, place the sticker cut out in the exact same place as the stamped image.

9.    Fold the 10” x 7” piece of card stock in half to create an A7 card.

10.           Using Mono Adhesive, layer the colored image onto the 3 ½” x 3 ½” piece of background paper that matches the dress.

11.           Adhere the previous layer onto the 4 ½” x 6 ½” background paper or cardstock and this layer onto your 5” x 7” card front.

12.           Color the word stamp with the red marker and stamp onto the scrap of white card stock.

13.           Cut freehand using the same motion as the stamp.  Adhere this to the scrap of red card stock.  Cut the red to match the motion of the white card stock, leaving approximately Ό” of red all the way around.

14.           Attach this to the bottom of the card.  You’re done.

Making a Mask from Post-it notes:

Find a post-it approximately the size of the image you are trying to mask.  Stamp your image onto the post-it, making sure that the image is on as much of the sticky backing as possible.  Cut out your image, or sections that you need to mask.  Place onto your original stamped image that you will be coloring/masking.  Stamp, sponge, etc. over the mask.  Remove when finished.
