Faux Silk Tapestry

By M. Elizabeth Lee
Rubber Roadsters
Publisher/Editor/Designer/Writer

Stamp Camp produces some of the most amazing background stamps.  This stamp is reminiscent of a tapestry rug and was a perfect design for the Faux Silk technique.  While this technique can be achieved by applying white glue to the tissue, the Xyron machine applies adhesive with no mess and is a streamlined process.

Supplies:

  • Giraffe stamp (Taylored Artwork)
  • Tapestry Background stamp (Stamp Camp)
  • White tissue paper
  • Mustard card stock cut to size: 4”x6”
  • Rust card stock cut to size: 3”x3”
  • Ivory card stock cut to size: 3”x3”
  • Teddy Bear Brown archival ink stamp pad (TAC, The Angel Company)
  • Autumn Leaves Kaleidacolor stamp pad (Tsukineko)
  • Sienna Brown colored pencil (Prismacolor)
  • Yellow Ochre colored pencil (Prismacolor)
  • Apple Green colored pencil (Prismacolor)
  • Green Bice colored pencil (Prismacolor)
  • Golden Gel Mediums Soft Gel (Matte)
  • Bone bead
  • Rust blended fibers
  • 11 Ivory colored pony beads
  • Deckle Scissors
  • Mono Adhesive (Tombow)
  • Xyron Machine
  • Shadow box frame with mini reed backing: 8¾”x6¾”

 Instructions:

1.  Stamp the Giraffe image on the cream card stock using Teddy Bear Brown archival dye ink stamp pad by TAC.  Refer to photo for color placement and render with colored pencils.  Apply Goldenrod Yellow to the center background. Color the greenery with Green Bice and shade with Apple Green.  Inside rim of circle and design corners are colored with a heavy application of Apple Green.  The outer circle rim and inside corners are colored with a light application of Bice Green.  Heighten the shading of the giraffe with Sienna Brown.

2.  Cut out image with Deckle Scissors and run Mono Adhesive on the backside.  Attach to the Rust card stock.

3.  Trim the Rust card stock with Deckle Scissors ¼” from the edge of the giraffe design.

4.  Ink up the Tapestry stamp with the Autumn Leaves Kaleidacolor stamp pad.  Trim away excess tissue with Deckle Scissors leaving a 1/8” edge.  Wad up the tissue into a ball and smooth back out.  Run the tissue through the Xyron machine for adhesion and attach to Mustard card stock.

5.  Loop 11 strands rust fibers over the bone bead.  Tie another fiber around all 11 strands directly under the bone bead and tie a knot in the back to secure.  Add a pony bead to each fiber as well as knot and trim the ends to form an inverted V design.  Glue the giraffe design to the fibers.

6.  Some frames already come with mini reed backdrops or they can be easily added.  Grass mat wallpapers make excellent alternatives.
