Paper Rock Scissors

By Casey Cholaki

Advanced Stamping Team Designer

Men! What to do, what to do for Father's Day? Another tie? Another card? No, give him a rock. Yes, I did say a rock. lol! This is a project that is different and sure to please.  It makes an ideal paper weight or home dιcor item.   As you can see by the title, I got the idea from the children's game called "Paper Rock Scissors". We will use all three in this project.

Supplies:

• King Tut Stamp (Stamp Francisco) It is important to make him feel like a king.
• Ink Pad Pumpkin Pie Vintage Ink (Ranger)
• Beach or River Rock (I live near a beach so I find mine there or purchase at your local nursery store.  It is important that it is smooth, round or oval, and flat.)
• Tan Tissue Paper (Craft Store non-bleed type)
• 3D Crystal Lacquer (Sakura)
• Galaxy Colored Markers (American Crafts)
        Orange
        Blue
        Yellow
        Black
• Gesso White and Black (Plaid) or acrylic Paint.
• Glue Stick (office supply store or craft store)
• Paint brush

Instructions:

1.                Begin by selecting your rock, thoroughly washing and drying it. Next, select which will be the top of the paperweight and use black gesso to completely paint only the top of the rock. Leave the backside unpainted so it shows it is a real rock.

2.                While this is drying, stamp your image onto the tan tissue paper making sure to leave at least a half-inch of tissue paper around the image. Turn the image over so you are coloring it on the backside of the tissue paper. Be gentle as tissue paper can tear easily. I used yellow for the face, neck, ears, and beard. Use the black marker to go over the eye areas, which will make it more intense when finished. I then used orange and blue markers to fill the lines in the headdress.

3.                Next gesso or paint an oval of white in the center of the rock the size of just your stamped image. You must place your stamped tissue image (do not glue at this point) on the oval so you get an idea of how much pumpkin ink you will need to add to the outer edges of the white oval. (You need the white oval because you do not want the stamped image to be too dark as it would be otherwise on a black rock.)

4.                After eye balling the stamped image, use your finger to apply the pumpkin ink to the edges of the white oval until you get a shade you like. Do not worry about the extra tissue paper; it is there for a reason.

5.                Take your scissors and carefully make little cuts in the outer edges of the tissue paper all the way around the stamped image. Do not cut into the actual image. This procedure will enable the tissue paper to wrap around the rock.

6.                Turn your image over and run your glue stick all over it. Other kinds of glue will make the paper wrinkle. Turn the stamped image back over and carefully place it in position on the rock working from the center out.

7.                Let it dry. Do not use a heat gun it can buckle the paper. After it is completely dried, pour some 3 D crystal lacquer in the center. You will need to work a little fast here. Using a paintbrush (I use my finger) cover the entire tissue paper. This will also act as a sealant and make it shine. Use as many coats as you like until you get the effect you want making sure to allow each coat to dry completely before adding another one.

8.                Last but not least, use a black or white permanent marker to write a sentiment on the bottom of the rock such as: "You are the King of my heart". Sign and date it. Then make a Father's Day card to go with it using some of the wonderful techniques found on "Rubber Road Adventures".

Until Next, time,

Stampin On Down The Road…
