Paper Tole ~
Beginners
Mary Shoebridge The technique of Paper Tole is making layers from different parts of a design so it has dimension. Supplies: · Pansies Stamp Set (TAC) · Picture Frame 4“ by 6“ (Crafty Frame ~Joanne’s) · Piece of 4-ply Bristol Board · 1 Sheet of 9“ x 12” Watercolor Paper cut into three pieces 3 7/8“ by 5 7/8“ (Mead Academie Pad) · Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils (Sanford ~ TAC) · # 6 Flat Watercolor Brush (Royal Taklon) · # 2 Round Watercolor Brush (Princeton Art & Brush Co.) · # 7 Round Watercolor Brush (Royal Fine Sable) · Waterproof Black Ink pad (Stewart Superior ~ TAC) · Victorian Violet Brilliance Ink pad (Tsukineko ~ TAC) · Metallic Gold, Hi Lite Violet Lumiere Paints (Jacquard ~ TAC) · Pencil · Scissors (Fiskars~Michaels) · Fine Tip Scissors (Kai) · Glue Stick (UHUstic ~ Michael’s) · Silcone Adhesive (Dow Corning ~ Hardware Store) · Sponge (TAC)Instructions: 1. Measure the watercolor paper and divide into three pieces to fit the frame. You will need 3 pieces of paper the same size for stamping the images. Size of paper is above. It should fit inside the frame. 2. Ink up the large Pansy image with the Black Waterproof Ink and stamp in the center of one piece of paper. This will be your main image to color. Also, stamp the other two pieces of paper with the large pansy. Measure 1/4” at each corner of the first piece of paper and make a dot with a pencil Ink up the pansy section of the label image Do not ink the leaf lines. Stamp the small pansy in each corner. 3. Color all the pansy images with the watercolor pencils and use a brush and water to paint the images. It is necessary to color the whole pansy image and the corner on the first image, on the second and third only color the pansy petal section. Paper Tole Technique: 1. Attach your main image with pansy corners to the piece of Bristol Paper with the Glue stick. I decided that this works better than the wood backing provided with frame and you can use the wood for another project. 2. Cut out the petals from the second and third stamped pansy images like in the sample. In the second image, cut out the middle two petals. In the third image, cut out the bottom petal. This will give you three layers to your stamped art. 3. Using the silicone adhesive, dab a small amount on the middle petals and attach to main image. Then add the other petal on top with another small dab of the adhesive. This adhesive gives an added dimension. Set aside your “Paper Tole Pansy.” Picture Frame1. Paint the frame with a coat of the Gold Lumiere Paint. Sponge on some of the Hi Lite Violet. Let the frame dry and then dab on some of the Victorian Violet Brilliance ink. You can take the pad and rub some of the color on the frame. This should give a purple pearlized effect. Let this dry and then place your pansy tole inside the frame.
