Velvet Stamping

Becky Lemire
Off Road Inksters
Intermediate Scramping Team Designer

I have to tell you that when I first stamped the title for this page, I thought that I totally messed it up.  Having only one set of this alphabet stamp set, I left the first "E" and "N" spaces empty on my acrylic block and proceeded with ironing the title.  When I went back to stamp those missing letters, the velvet moved on me so I ended up with a crooked title.  I put that title aside and made another attempt and was successful at making it straight.  Needless to say, I went back to the original title strip and had fun with it.  Just goes to show you that your mistakes aren't really mistakes after all, so have fun!

Supplies:

  • Eclectic Alphabet Stamp Set (TAC)
  • Candy Hearts Stamp Set (TAC)

    • 3 1/2" x 12"
    • scraps to make tags (found online or local fabric store)
  • Die Cut Machine (Sizzix~ *TAC)
  • Scallop Tag Combo Die (Sizzix~ *TAC)
  • Household Iron
  • Water Spritzer
  • Pinking Shears
  • Double Stick Tape (3M)
  • White Heart Eyelets (unknown)
  • Eyelet setter & Hammer

Instructions

1.  Cut all cardstock and velvet to sizes listed above in the supply list.

2.  Using the die cut machine and the scallop tag die, cut two of the medium size tags out of the scrap white cardstock and two of the medium size tags out of the velvet.

3.  Using your pinking shears, cut around all sides of the cut burgundy cardstock to give it a decorative edge.  Tape the white tags to the scraps of burgundy cardstock and cut the burgundy cardstock using pinking shears to frame the tag.

4.  Heat your household iron or craft iron to the highest setting without steam.

5.  Title:  Attach your letters to the 1 x 7 acrylic block.  Lay the block with the rubber side up.  Lay your 1 1/2"x 6 1/2" piece of velvet, velvet side down, onto the stamps.  Using a water spritzer, spritz a small amount of water on the back side of the velvet.  Lay your hot iron onto the wet velvet and hold for about 5 seconds.  Lift your iron to check the velvet.  If you can clearly see the shape of the image you just stamped, you are done.  If you get a crooked title like I did, you can always stamp a heart in the blank space.

**Note about the iron:  You want to use the part of the iron that has no steam holes.  Steam holes will leave that shape on your velvet.  If you have too many steam holes in your iron to avoid, or the area you are ironing is a large area, constantly move your iron around while pressing so as not to leave any unwanted marks.

6.  Side Strip:  Attach all 8 hearts from the Candy Hearts stamp set randomly on a 3” x 5” acrylic block.  Lay the block rubber side up and lay the 3 1/2" x 12" velvet piece face down on the stamps.  Spritz and iron as before.  Move the velvet to process the middle of the strip and repeat spritzing and ironing. Do the same for the bottom of the strip.

7.  Velvet Tags:  Attach a candy heart stamp to a 2 x 2 acrylic block and lay the velvet tag face down on the stamp.  Spritz and iron.  Repeat with the other velvet tag.  Attach white heart eyelets to the tags using an eyelet setter and hammer.  The holes are already cut for you from the die cut machine.

8.  Attach the velvet title to the 1 5/8" x 6 5/8" piece of white cardstock using double stick tape.  Attach that to the 2 1/4" x 7 1/4" piece of burgundy cardstock that you cut with pinking shears.  Attach the entire title piece to the upper right side of the page as shown in photo.

9.  Attach your 3 1/2" x 5" photos to the 3 3/4" x 5 1/4" pieces of white cardstock using double stick tape.  Attach that to the pinked 4 1/4" x 5 3/4" burgundy pieces.  Attach your matted photos as shown in the photo.

10.  Attach the side strip of velvet to the left side of the page using double stick tape.

11.  Attach the cardstock tags as shown and the velvet tags on top of them as shown using double stick tape.

12.  Journal on the cardstock tags as desired.
