Paint Chip Samples

By M. Elizabeth Lee
Rubber Roadsters
Publisher/Editor/Designer/Writer

Paint Chip Samples are used extensively in my art work.  Not only are they free, but come in more colors than I can store in my studio of card stock!  They are found at local paint or hardware stores, Wal~Mart, & K Mart. They come in a variety of sizes from strips to short oval edge cards to fairly large cards. They can be used on card fronts as well as other paper arts projects including creating Artists Trading Cards (ATCs).  Lowe’s has chip samples to show various styles of granites, marbles, and sands.

Paint Chip Samples have a sturdy thickness that is suitable for all types of applications such as inks, acrylic paints, watercolors, Shimmerz, and chalk popping over Versamark to name a few. They have an excellent surface for stamping and heat embossing.  In test drives of various inks, I found Versamark, StazOn, Kaleidacolor, Palette Hybrid, and pigment inks to work the best.  Not all inks interact well with the coated surface and tend to bleed or are slow to dry such as Versafine Ink Pads.  Radiant Pearls is another medium that would be difficult to use on Paint Chip Samples, since they dry by absorption into the paper.

Next time you are near a paint department, be sure to select your personal stash of Paint Chip Samples to experiment with.  You’ll want to keep them handy in your craft working area!

Instructions:

    1. Place the Lavender striped card stock onto the rotary paper cutter as if it were going to be cut in half.  Close the hold down bar and move the blade out of the way.  Take a bone folder and score the card stock twice right up against the hold down bar.  Remove card stock, fold in half, and set aside.

    1. With the Corner Punch, punch each corner of both the Lavender solid and the Multicolored Paint Chip Samples.

    1. Ink up the Gecko image with Versamark Ink and stamp onto the Multicolored Paint Chip.  Sprinkle with Black embossing powder and melt with a heat tool.

    1. Using a liner brush, paint the Gecko with the three colors of Lumiere Paints.  Refer to the photo for color placement. Using the paint brush handle dip into paint and dot each of the Gecko’s toes.  Dip the paint brush handle into paint for each dot to create the same size dip~dots. Allow to dry thoroughly.

    1. To make the two Concho Embellishments, cut the threads and fibers to 2” lengths.  Thread all at once through the Concho leaving more length hanging on one end than the other. Spread the fibers and threads out and trim.  Refer to photo as a guide. The bottom edges in this sample were cut in a v~shape.

    1. Run Mono Adhesive to the back side of the Gecko Paint Chip and attach to the Lavender Paint Chip.  Run Mono Adhesive to the back side of the Lavender Paint Chip and attach to the folded card.

    1. Apply Diamond Glaze to the back sides of the two Concho Embellishments and attach to the card front.  One Concho is glued to the upper right corner, and the other is glued to the lower left corner.  Refer to photo for Concho placement.
