Hinging On That

Using three-dimensional
embellishments on layout pages brings a wonderful
new look and even better texture! Thinking outside-of-the-box can really open
up a new world when it comes to designing layout pages.
Being married to a
contractor, I have spent a lot of time in home improvement stores. While I used
to follow my husband around, I discovered that home improvement, also, meant
scrapbook improvement! No wonder my husband loves that store – it is full of
toys!
In this page I have used
hinges, but the possibilities are endless with hardware. There are all kinds of
hinges, fasteners, flaps, locks, etc. Use your imagination or follow the
included directions to duplicate my page.
You will notice that
there is a nice flow to this page, and it is easy on the eye. In taking a
closer look, you will see that there are many characteristics that have been
repeated and help create balance: The buttons mimic the shape of the letters
stamped onto the page. The red plaid is mimicking the little girl’s skirt. The
denim paper and the blue paper clips help pull some blue out of the photo. The
green paper reflects the green grass. The yellow paper reflects the yellow
flowers. Naturally red, yellow, and green work well together if the proper
shades are used, and in these bright hues it easily reminds us of school.

The area around the main
photo is clear from any other objects. All of the writing and embellishments
are outside of its box. With the ‘noise’ of the page running down the right
side and across the bottom, our eye is continually moving. Our eyes seem to
start at the main photo then follow the words down the right-hand side, across
the bottom to the left, and back up to the main photo. Once back at the main
photo we make the journey to the world behind it, opening up the hinges to
reveal our journaling.

Instructions:
-
Paint both sides of
the hinges and the heads of the brads with Cardinal Red paint. Set aside to
dry.
-
Layer the 4 ¾” x 6
¾” piece of Butter Yellow cardstock on top of the 5” x 7” piece of Denim
Blue Jean.
-
Lay the 1” x 5”
piece of All Star Plaid across the Butter Yellow cardstock as shown in the
photo.
-
Attach the black
corner stickers to the 4” x 6” photo and layer it on top of the Butter
Yellow cardstock partially covering the All Star Plaid strip.
-
Attach front side of
hinges to this new ‘front piece’ you have created using the brads.
-
On the reverse side
of the 5 “x 7” piece of Denim Blue Jean paper, layer the 4 ⅞” x 6 ¾” piece
of Butter Yellow cardstock covering the tail ends of the brads. The back of
your front piece should now have a clean appearance.
-
Attach back side of
hinges to 5 ¼” x 7 ¼” piece of Black cardstock taking care to make sure you
have your layers lined up and centered.
-
The front of the
Black piece of cardstock is where you will do your journaling using the
white gel pen. This gives us the effect of seeing writing on the
chalkboard.
-
This finished piece
will now be set on your 12” x 12” sheet of All Star Plaid.
-
Using scraps of
cardstock or printed paper create the green strip under the photo and the
yellow strip to the right of the photo. Put these anywhere from ⅞ “ to 1 ¼
“ inches below and to the side of your main photo (according to your own
preferences in using your particular smaller photos). This is not going to
be an exact science, but rather experimenting according to your particular
needs.
-
Take your smaller
photos and layer them on top of yellow, green and red cardstock. Layer this
over the vertical yellow strip to the right of the main photo.
-
Place the needed
alphabet stamps from the Circle-bet set on your 1” x 7” acrylic mount. In
my page, I used ‘McIntyre’, our last name. Ink up the stamps with the Black
Beauty ink pad and test stamp your word on a piece of scratch paper.
Reposition alphabet stamps as necessary to straighten your letters and word,
re-ink, and stamp onto your page in the lower left-hand corner. Use your
clear mount as your guide. This is the luxury of using unmounted stamps.
There is no guess work as to where to stamp your letters to make them line
up. You simply stamp in one step, and see where you are stamping in the
process. Remember to clean your stamps, and put the lid back on your ink
pad.
-
Using the four
strips of Natural Pine printed paper, adhere them to the 3 ⅛” x 2 ¼” piece
of Black cardstock to make a chalkboard. Layer this onto your 12” x 12”
page in the lower right-hand corner as shown.
-
Take the white
alphabet stickers and use them to write ‘A+ Student’ in the chalkboard. To
make the plus sign, I cut off the tops and bottoms of two letters “I”. Lay
one over the other, and you have a plus sign.
-
Use the black
rub-on letters to write ‘Student Council’ on one metal framed paper tag and
the date of the first day of school on the other. Adhere these two tags to
the page and then attach a blue plastic coated paper clip to each one so
that it appears the paper clips are holding the tags to the page.
-
Take red, yellow,
and green buttons and secure them to the page. I have the yellow button
slightly covering the green button. This gives the page added texture by
taking the embellishes toward you even further.
-
Using the Dymo
font, type the names, student council positions, and page title. Using a
font size of 36 will make the labels the size of actual label maker labels.
If you try to make a space while typing, it will appear to cut your label.
To avoid this, and make one long label, use the ‘pipe’ on your keyboard.
The pipe is located, along with the backslash, above the enter key and below
the backspace key. Use the shift key to access the pipe. Print onto White
cardstock. Cut out the labels using your scissors and then layer them onto
the page.
