Split Negative Soot Stamping

By Stephanie Loomis
Crafty Cruisers
Intermediate Stamping Team Designer

Supplies:

  • Travel Collage Stamp Set (TAC)
  • Ancient Alphabet Stamp Set (TAC)
  • VersaMark Ink (Tsukineko ~TAC)
  • Canyon Creek (Purple) Chalk ink (Palette~TAC)
  • Two Glossy White cardstock pieces, cut to: 2 ¾” x 4 ¼” (TAC)
  • A2 ivory note card (5 ½” x 4 ¼” when folded)
  • Cardstock scraps in Tuscan colors
  • Russet handmade paper (3 1/8” x 2 3/8”)
  • Cream textured paper (3 1/8” x 2 3/8”)
  • Purple Bazzill cardstock, 2 pieces (3 ½” x 2 5/8”)
  • Rust colored cardstock cut to 5 ½” x 4 ¼”
  • Votive candle
  • Matches
  • Cotton ball
  • Krylon Workable Fixative
  • ½” wide gold organza ribbon cur to 6”
  • Deckle scissors
  • Double Stick Tape (I prefer Scotch brand)

Instructions:

1.    Stamp Italian travel collage with VersaMark ink on one of the glossy cardstock pieces.

2.    In a kitchen or bathroom (or wherever there is a sink for safety), light votive candle.

3.     Carefully, holding the edges of the stamped glossy cardstock, gently move the paper over the flame. Move in fluid back and forth motions until the cardstock is black with soot.

4.    Repeat with the UNSTAMPED glossy cardstock.

5.    With a dry stamp, stamp the Italian travel collage onto the black sooty glossy cardstock. This will remove soot and leave a negative image of the stamp. Be careful not to touch the soot with your fingers, or you’ll have an impression of your fingerprint!

6.    Spray generously with workable fixative. Let dry.

7.    Use the cotton ball to gently wipe the soot away from the VersaMark inked cardstock. The soot will stick to the VersaMark ink, leaving a positive image.

8.    Trim images with Deckle scissors.

9.    Layer positive image on russet scrap.

10.           Layer negative image on cream scrap

11.           Adhere each to purple scrap.

12.           Adhere to rust cardstock as shown.

13.            Using Ancient Alphabet, stamp “giorno” using purple chalk ink underneath positive image. (“Giorno” is Italian for “day.”)

14.           Using Ancient Alphabet, stamp “notte” above negative image. (“Notte” is Italian for “night.”)

15.           Using Ancient Alphabet, stamp “Italia” on ribbon multiple times. You may choose to overwrite the letters with a Sharpie or other marker.

16.           Wrap ribbon around card as shown and adhere to reverse using double stick tape.

17.           Adhere whole creation to note card with double stick tape.

18.           Sign your art!
